Wellcome Collection, Souzou Exhibition 2013
Souzou is a Japanese word that has no direct equivalent in English: it means creation and imagination. It refers to the practice of self-taught artists working within social welfare facilities across Japan that had been diagnosed with cognitive, behavioural, or mental illnesses. Raksha worked with school groups and adults with learning disabilities who visited the 'Souzou' exhibition, there they explored its themes through discussion and activities. The participants used clay, made dolls out of tights and cloth, drawing and stop-frame animation. The project gave scope to continue their own making beyond the exhibition.
